Tata Elxsi plans to tap virtual reality space
BANGALORE, Oct 6
TATA Elxsi, the product design arm of the Tata Group, is sharpening its focus on the Virtual Reality (VR) space.
The company is firming up its plans to aggressively tap the automotive, manufacturing and life sciences market with its VR solutions, said Mr M.M. Prasad, General Manager, Sales and Marketing, Tata Elxsi.
"We have a very strong presence in the manufacturing market segment and will be leveraging this strength to translate into business opportunities," said Mr Prasad.
Tata Elxsi expects the automotive industry in India to take leadership in deploying VR in their design and engineering process. "Life science market, which includes both bio informatics and medical engineering, will mature into a large opportunity soon," Mr Prasad said.
Over the next two quarters, the company also expects to foray into the visual simulation segment, a logical extension of VR. "This will provide us with opportunities in aerospace and defence organisations for providing solutions in flight simulation and mission planning decision support systems," he added.
"Globally, automotive organisations have started evaluating the possibility of implementing VR in crash simulation and we expect the Indian companies to follow suit. With passenger safety becoming important, designing vehicles which are crashworthy is becoming the most critical part of design process.
``With stringent government regulations, designs are growing in complexities, building prototypes are time-consuming and expensive. High performance computing coupled with VR enables auto companies to run multiple simulations on high performance computers for solution and visualise the result of simulation, do necessary design modifications and evaluate the modified design in a much shorter time frame," he said.
Explaining the concept of VR, Mr Prasad said it enabled humans to collaboratively visualise, manipulate and interact with extremely complex data. It enables the manufacturing industry to reengineer their product development process in order to bring new, better-quality products to market faster, at a lower cost, with more options for consumers.
The VR environment supports the entire product development process, from conceptual modelling to engineering and design review, visualisation of complex analysis data, factory floor simulation, training, and review for customers.
VR, which forms part of Tata Elxsi's system integration business, is not new to the company and it has already a clientele of two naval organisations for which it has provided solutions in 1999 in partnership with SGI.
