Sankara Nethralaya plans hospital in Kolkata

S. Gopikrishna Warrier

CHENNAI, Nov. 7

SANKARA Nethralaya, which pioneered the concept of a dedicated hospital for eye care, is set to launch an eye hospital in Kolkata, in collaboration with the Asia Heart Foundation (AHF).

According to Dr S.S. Badrinath, Chairman, Sankara Nethralaya, the Kolkata hospital is expected to be commissioned by the middle of January 2003 in Salt Lake area. "The idea is to start in a small way," he said.

"If the project becomes successful then we want to make it into a centre for excellence in eye care in the model of the Chennai hospital."

At the beginning the hospital will have facilities for treating cataract and vitreo retinal diseases, he said.

It can later grow into a full-fledged hospital if the demand for the services exists. While AHF will arrange the funding for the Rs 9 crore project , the operational knowhow will be by Sankara Nethralaya, Dr Badrinath said.

"They bring in the land, building and money and we will bring the technical know how. We will handle the medical and technical administration of the hospital."

The hospital will be called Sankara Narayana Nethralaya.

Dr Badrinath said the hospital is coming up on a three-acre plot of land gifted by the East India Rotary Foundation to AHF.

The West Bengal Government originally allotted the land to the Rotary Foundation.

He said that a 9,000 sq ft building is already standing at the site, which the Rotary Foundation had built and had wanted to run a hospital.

But since they could not handle the project they gifted it to AHF.

The Heart Foundation did not want to set up another cardiac care hospital, since it is already runs one in Kolkata.

It invited Sanakara Nethralaya to collaborate in setting up an eye hospital.

The West Bengal Chief Minister kicked off the work on the project on September 19.
