Wage dispute at Premier Tyres settled

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An amicable settlement to the long-drawn wage dispute at the Premier Tyres plant at Kalamassery near Ernakulam has been reached following reconciliation talks convened by the Labour Commissioner, Mr Srinivasan, and held in Ernakulam in the presence of the State Labour Minister, Mr Babu Divakaran.

Announcing this, an official spokesman said that the management and the unions have signed a long-term agreement to the effect.

As per terms of the agreement, each employee will get a hike in monthly wages extending to Rs 2,000 on an average. On their part, the employees have committed themselves to raising productivity levels by 20 per cent. Production at the Kalamassery plant is sought to be raised to 60 metric tonnes per day.

The agreement will hold good for the next three years. It also provides for installation of modern equipment at the plant and raised productivity levels in the lines of the Apollo Tyres model.

At the meeting, the unions were represented by Mr Aryadan Muhammad MLA, Mr M.O.John (Workers' Union), Mr A.V. Tamarakshan, MLA, Mr C.P. Sebastian (Workers Association), Mr K.N. Ravindranath and Mr P.S. Gangadharan (Employees Union) while the management was represented by Mr Asoka Ayer, Mr N. Sreekumar, Mr A.S. Gireesh, Mr V.N. Lukose, Mr James Joseph, Mr S.S. Rajagopal, and the Additional Labour Commissioner.
