Kerala Govt seeks Rs 1,035-cr drought relief

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Government has sought Rs 1,035 crore as drought relief from the Centre. Of this, Rs 910 crore was meant for making good the shortfall in electricity generation caused by the drought, the State Revenue Minister, Mr K.M. Mani, told a Central team led by the Joint Secretary in the Union Agriculture Department, Mr S.K. Ojha, on Monday.
The Minister said that Kerala could not be compared to the other States in the matter of drought considering the peculiar climatic variations. The drought had resulted in a shortfall of 8.77 million units in daily power generation from hydel sources that had to be compensated through purchase of thermal power. This would require Rs 910 crore for 10 months.
The agricultural loss due to the drought was to the tune of Rs 104 crore, of which as much as Rs 91 crore was accounted for by Palakkad district.
