LANCO Kondapalli Power Pvt Ltd (LKPL) has placed orders worth Rs 4 lakh for Kondapalli toys to encourage artisans to use natural dyes instead of synthetic ones.

LKPL, in association with Lanco Institute of General Humanitarian Trust (LIGHT), has taken up a programme for the uplift of the traditional artisans of Kondapalli village near Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh. The company proposes to gift Kondapalli toys for New Year.

On account of the rising cost of making natural dyes, these artisans have switched over to synthetic dyes, thus losing whatever meagre market for exports they had for their toys.

A toy made of natural dyes costs four times more than that made with synthetic dyes. The toys are made with the locally available white sander wood. The artisans prepare natural dyes from the extracts of plants grown in the vicinity.

The LKPL Managing Director, Mr Y. Harish Chandra Prasad, told newspersons here on Wednesday that in order to provide international exposure to artisans, LIGHT, in collaboration with Air India, was sponsoring two artisans to take part in the World Telugu Federation Conference to be held at Singapore this month end. Kondapalli toys would be displayed in a stall to be established at the conference. The Andhra Pradesh Minister for Small Scale Industries, Mr B. Gopalakrishna Reddy, handed over two air tickets to the artisans provided free of cost by Air India.

According to Mr Prasad, LIGHT has taken up various activities for the development of all the 122 artisans at Kondapalli.

These include providing life insurance cover to the entire community, conducting works shops for modernisation of their skills and improving the market for their toys.

The Union Government has also sanctioned Rs 40 lakh under Babasaheb Ambedkar Hasta Shilpa Vikas Yojana for improvement of design skills of the artisans over a period of three years.
