Monster sees India as most profitable market

Vipin V. Nair

NEW DELHI, Dec. 18

MONSTER, the US-based recruitment portal, sees India as its most profitable and largest market in the Asia-Pacific region by the end of 2003. According to a top company official job opportunities in the country are bound to increase.

"In terms of volumes and margins, India will be number one for Monster in the Asia-Pacific region, ahead of Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong,'' said Mr Craig Kennedy, President, Monster, Asia-Pacific.

Speaking to Business Line here, Mr Kennedy said large outsourcing work coming to India for software and IT-enabled services will fuel the job market, creating more jobs.

``India is by far the most important market for Monster," Mr Kennedy said. ``We can go far more aggressively in India now.''

He said the company would add more people to the sales team in India in view of positive trends in the job market. "We have 50 people in India now. We will be 65-67 next year."

Monster, which claims to have a 55 per cent market share in the US in terms of revenues, will focus its attention on the IT and pharmaceuticals industries in India. The company is also contemplating to tie up with corporates as part of the growth plans.

The company earns its revenues from listing jobs on the Web sites from companies/head hunters, by providing access to its database of resumes and offering technical support on online hiring to companies.

Asked whether Monster would look at acquisitions in India, Mr Kennedy said, as of now, the company has planned its strategies in India on the basis of organic growth. "Our current financial plans are based on organic growth here."
