Hardware Tata Elxsi to cater to R&D sector Vishwanath Kulkarni
BANGALORE, Dec. 19 "SOFTWARE for Researchware" is the new mantra at Tata Elxsi, the technical computing arm of the Tata Group, even as the company eyes a pie of the fundamental research budgets of global corporates and R&D institutions. The company plans to produce and market aggressively its "load balancing software" tools, used in high performance computing, said Mr Ramki Shankarnarayanan, General Manager, Worldwide Sales and Marketing. Load balancing is a parallel processing and communications activity to distribute evenly the task across multiple processors and computer network so that no single device or channel is overwhelmed. Tata Elxsi, which has about half-a-dozen customers in the US and Japan for its high-performance computing tools, plans to go after the fundamental research budgets of large global corporates and research institutions, Mr Ramki said. "Productising the tools and marketing them aggressively forms part of our strategy to broaden our customer base," he said adding that the company is looking at close linkages with academia and research organisations. "Tata Elxsi is gaining a critical mass in the high performance computing business," Mr Ramki said, adding "we are at an inflexion point in this business." "We expect to grow the high performance computing business rapidly and have visibility for the next 2-3 quarters," Mr Ramki said. Currently, the HPC domain accounts for nearly 10-15 per cent of the company's overall revenues. The company is in the process of filing copyrights and patents for certain algorithms and tools. It is also looking at the domestic market to sell its tools. "We are assessing the Indian market and plan to target the research establishments within the Government," he said. The domain areas for Tata Elxsi's high performance computing applications include circuit simulation, molecular simulation, computational fluid dynamics and bio computing. The company's unique positioning in the HPC domain lies in its inherent capabilities in addressing computational issues related to scientific research, he said. Tata Elxsi's load balancing tools developed on Linux platform support different architectures. The tools cut down the cycle time for researchers in simulation, apart from reducing the load imbalance from nearly 80-90 per cent to about 7 per cent. The company is also creating new software applications for grid computing in areas of circuit simulation, bio-computing, neural networks, computational fluid dynamics, financial analysis and computing.
