NEW DELHI, Dec. 26

IMPORTS of items relating to 300 sensitive tariff lines surged by 17 per cent in rupee terms during April-October 2002 to touch Rs 7,805.31 crore as against a level of Rs 6,671 crore in the same period last year.

The growth in imports has primarily come about on account of the significant rise in crude palm oil imports, according to an official release issued by the Department of Commerce.

Imports of edible oil touched a level of Rs 4,900.69 crore during April-October 2002 as against an import level of 4,015.74 crore in the same period last year. "The significant feature of edible oil import is that while import of crude palm oil has gone up, that of refined palm oil has gone down leading to better utilisation in the processing capacity in the country. Imports of sunflower oil, both crude and refined, have gone down," the release said.

Imports of cotton and silk, alcoholic beverages and poultry have shown a decline at broad group level during the period. Imports of edible oil, fruits and vegetables, automobiles, milk and milk products, SSI products and food grains have increased during April-October 2002 as against the same period the previous year.

Automobile imports into the country touched a level of Rs 200.49 crore during April-October 2002 as against a level of Rs 39.35 crore recorded in the same period last year.
