THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Dec. 29

ASIANET, the Malayalam satellite television company, has lined up a series of special programmes on December 31 and January 1 to usher in the New Year.

While films and film-based shows are the dominant flavour, humour, music and current-affairs programming also find a place in the company's special programmes for New Year's eve.

The countdown to 2003 will begin on the flagship Asianet channel on December 31 with a special Suprabatham breakfast show, a company spokesperson said.

Through the course of the day, the channel will air other special programmes such as a `treasure hunt', ghazals and humour-based shows.

The channel will ring in the New Year with a special 15-minute programme called Welcome 2003.

The show, scheduled to start at 11.45 p.m. on December 31, will among other things feature prominent film stars sharing their memories of the year gone by.

A major facet of the channel's New Year celebrations will be the telecast of six blockbuster Malayalam films, three each on December 31 and January 1, the spokesperson added.

All three films to be telecast on January 1 will be making their television debut on the channel.

In addition, the channel will also air a review of the Malayalam films released in 2002.

On the Asianet Global channel, the focus will be on news and current affairs-based programming.

It will telecast several programmes that capture the important developments of the year gone by.

One attraction will be a compilation of the best `Asianet Specials' of 2002.

Other programmes will present a round-up of events in the State and from across the world.

The channel will also telecast live a `New Year Mega Mela' programme from 10 p.m. on December 31.

In addition, it will telecast live New Year's eve celebrations from Dubai.

This programme will start at 1 a.m. IST on January 1, according to the spokesperson.

This is the first time that a Malayalam television channel is carrying a live telecast of celebrations in another country, the spokesperson added.
