Tourism Rs 13 cr to boost tourism in Ernakulam Our Bureau
KOCHI, Jan. 3 THE Kerala Tourism Department initiated developmental projects worth Rs 13 crore in Ernakulam district during the past year. As much as Rs 7.25 crore have been released for improving the condition of important roads in the city and nearby Mulavukad panchayat and another Rs 3.31 crore for the tourism centres in Fort Kochi and Mattanchery, a statement issued by the Department said. Funds released for projects taken up by the District Tourism Promotion Council amounted to Rs 1.44 crore and last year, the Ernakulam DTPC was the biggest beneficiary of financial help from the Government. The stretch of road from Ernakulam South Railway station to Jos Junction would be improved at a cost of Rs 43 lakh. Funds have also been released for development of Sahodaran Ayyappan Road, construction of a new culvert across Mullassery Canal, renovation of the Kumbalangi-Ezhupunna road as well as roads in Mulavukad and Vallarpadam areas. Works like renovation of the Durbar Hall grounds, construction of a Cheenavalapalam near the Children's Park, musical fountain in the park and pedal boating pond have been completed. The first phase of the Fort Kochi heritage project is also over. Beautification of Cherai beach, setting up of tourist information centre at Kothamangalam, tourist centre at Vallarpadam have been initiated. The department had also invited tenders for constructing a new bridge parallel to Pokkupalam near Menaka junction at Marine Drive. The renovation of the Ernakulam Guest House, a heritage building in the city is nearing completion.
