81,000 ha of forest encroached upon

Our Bureau

BANGALORE: An estimated 81,000 hectares of forestland in Karnataka has been encroached upon in the last five years.

The statistics on forest encroachment has baffled environmentalists in the State with a huge gap of over 81,000 hectares between 1997 and 2002. In 1997, the Government had written to the Centre for regularising 17,007.23 ha forest land encroached before 1978, by underprivileged people. Approving the regularisation of nearly 14,848.83 ha, the Centre had then issued a Government Order in this regard.

However, during the recently concluded legislature session, a unanimous resolution was passed with regard to urging the Centre to regularise 98,978 ha of forest land. The resolution also stated that the farmers had been cultivating the land for more than 40 years and some of them were small holdings.
