Hyundai sales up 23 pc in 2002

NEW DELHI, Jan. 3

BACKED by a spurt in growth in year-end sales, Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) has ended the year 2002 with sales of 1,11,051 units, up 23 per cent over 2001 sales of 90,028 units. Hyundai's sales in December peaked at 6,768 units as against December 2001 sales of 3,388 units.

According to a company press release, its overall market share went up by 2.3 per cent to reach 18.9 per cent.

The year also saw HMIL achieve another significant landmark of 3.5 lakh units in cumulative sales in a period of 50 months.

In 2002, sales of the flagship Santro witnessed a 22 per cent increase to 87,262 units, while Accent registered a 26 per cent growth to 21,697 units and Sonata, a 65 per cent growth to 2,092 units.

Exports were up 35 per cent to 8,245 units during the year.Commenting on the record sales, Mr JI Kim, Managing Director, HMIL said, "The year 2002 has been an eventful year for us and we are happy with what we have been able to achieve. We have set our sights on achieving the half-a-million unit mark in sales for 2003 and on making HMIL a truly global player with capabilities to compete in the evolved automobile markets of Western Europe and North America."

During the year, Hyundai Motor India Ltd launched the Santro Zip Plus and the Santro Zip Plus Automatic in the compact segment, the Accent Viva and the Accent CRDi in the mid-sized segment and recently, the Sonata V6 in the premium segment.

Honda Dec sales up 11 pc

Honda Siel Cars Ltd has recorded 11.68 per cent growth in sales in December 2002, having sold 937 units of its City and Accord sedans as against 839 units sold in the same month a year ago.

Honda Siel's cumulative sales till December last year was 9,558 units, up by 28.14 per cent over 7,459 units it had sold in the same period a year ago, a company statement said here today.

A joint venture between Japan's Honda Motor Company and Siel Ltd, Honda Siel started commercial production in December 1997. The company sells the City and Accord cars in India and, in the current year, may launch a few new models.
