No pre-Budget meetings, only written views

NEW DELHI, Jan. 3

DISPENSING with the practice of holding pre-Budget meetings with various groups, the Finance Minister, Mr Jaswant Singh, today decided to invite written comments from experts, which he said were "far more relevant and useful" than holding meetings.

In a letter to over 150 experts in the sectors of agriculture, small-scale industries, consumer organisations, economists, representatives of financial institutions, industrialists and others, the Finance Minister has said that meetings did not provide adequate time or opportunity for individuals to express their views in a focused and satisfactory manner.
