Asian Social Forum for creating `another world'

Ch. Prashanth Reddy

HYDERABAD, Jan. 4

THOUSANDS of people who landed here from various parts of Asia to attend the meetings of the Asian Social Forum (ASF) believe that "another world is possible".

"It is just as well that another world is possible, because the present one is something of a catastrophe", eminent economist, Dr Jean Dreze, said in his key note address at the conference on securing social rights in the context of globalisation.

It is not just economists such as Dr Jean Dreze and Prof. Prabhat Patnaik, but people of various walks of life belonging to over 300 organisations across Asia have expressed their unflinching commitment to create another world that is free from war mongering, hunger and fratricidal wars.

ASF, a summit of social activists, is also unanimous against globalisation and imperialism.

The on-going summit has become an open platform for debate and interaction to people's movements. ASF draws inspiration from the World Social Forum, an annual event held at Porto Alegre in Brazil that has challenged the Brettonwoods institutions — the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

There has been an overwhelming response to the six-day meeting of ASF that has become a forum for social struggles. While organisers of the meeting expected 10,000 delegates, the number of participants went beyond their expectations and they had run out of registration material. The main venue of the meeting was seen buzzing with activity right from Thursday morning much before the plenary session of the summit.

With over 45 seminars and 50 workshops being held as part of the summit, almost all the meeting halls in Hyderabad are booked.

These apart, cultural programmes are being held at various venues. Different organisations are also seen busy holding rallies in different parts of the city against liberalisation, globalisation and oppression of people.
