Rubber zooms to Rs 45/kg

Our Correspondent

KOTTAYAM, Jan. 27

RUBBER prices zoomed again to touch Rs 45 a kg on Monday on extremely low arrivals in the market.

``Rubber is available everywhere including the upcountry outlets. But its supply is restricted to the main market,'' a leading trader told Business Line.

Even a small producer holds a minimum of 100 kg stock for disposal when prices soar high to a record level of their expectation. Harvesting will almost stop in all the plantations following tapping rest after leaf fall at the end of this month. The prices improved on entry of buyers from the tyre sector. There was demand from other grades also. Buyers from the general rubber goods sector purchased a good quantity of ungraded rubber. Demand was moderate. Buyers generally appeared keen in procuring rubber as they were afraid of non-availability of the commodity to meet the immediate requirements. The market is likely to face shortage in the coming weeks as lean months are ahead due to tapping rest, dry weather etc.

Sheet rubber RSS 4 was traded at Rs 45 in place of Rs 44.50 a kg on Saturday. Latex 60 per cent also improved to Rs 33 against Rs 32 on the previous day. Other grades remained steady with block rubber ISNR 20 at Rs 43.50, RSS 5 at Rs 43.50 and ungraded rubber at Rs 42.
