AP tops in child labour, says ILO

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD, Jan. 27

ANDHRA Pradesh has the dubious distinction of having the highest incidence of child labour in India, according to the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

Despite the best efforts being put in by the State Government, the menace of child labour was still virulent in the society owing to growing population, poverty, ignorance of parents, apart from other economic and social constraints, ILO said in a press release here.

According to ILO, which is currently sponsoring an international programme on elimination of child labour (IPEC) in the State, it had selected Andhra Pradesh the child labour endemic State to wipe out the practice on a large scale.

The ILO is of the view that child labour being an accepted reality in the State, bringing out attitudinal changes and changing social mindsets by way of sensitisation and capacity building could prove fruitful.

Addressing a State-level sensitisation programme for film personalities here, the ILO Project Manager, Mr M.P. Joseph, thanked the cine artists for their support and pointed out how the influence of Telugu film industry can change attitudes on child labour in the State and outside.

Speaking on the occasion, the President of Movie Artistes Association, Mr Murali Mohan, said there was a need to foster awareness and enlightenment among parents in rural areas to desist the temptation for children's earnings. He also advocated vocational and technical courses after minimum education.

ILO had earlier organised similar sensitisation programmes for the cultural groups, religious groups, parliamentarians and police officers.
