NEW DELHI: The Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, has launched an initiative called `Hariyali' under the watershed management project, which would enable the rural population to conserve water for drinking, irrigation, fisheries and afforestation as well as to generate employment opportunities.

Inaugurating the National Conference of the State Ministers of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Public Works here on Monday, Mr Vajpayee said that this programme would be implemented by the Panchayati Raj Institutions with people's contribution and participation.

The Union Minister for Rural Development, Mr Shanta Kumar, said on the occasion that under the Hariyali project, the Gram Panchayat would execute watershed projects with technical support from the Block Panchayat, which would act as project implementation agency for all watershed projects in a particular block.
