Giving trees a fresh lease of life

BANGALORE, Jan. 27

IT is only natural that Bangalore, the city known for its tree-lined avenues, should have the first arboriculture association in the country.

Interestingly, the voluntary association came about when the founder- member, Mr S. Narayanswamy realised that very few people, even among the academia knew what "arboriculture" (or urban forestry, which looks at the science of developing and maintaining trees) meant.

Founded in the year 2000, soon after the first seminar on arboriculture was held in Bangalore, the association is today 50 members strong, with some VIP members. One among them is Mr A.N. Yellappa Reddy, environmentalist and former Environment Secretary of Karnataka, who is the brain behind the sacred grove near Ramanagaram.

The association still has to start work in earnest, admitted Mr Narayanswamy. So far, it has been busying itself creating awareness of the way trees should be maintained. It recommends periodic pruning as is done in the UK and the US, to keep its growth "within limits".

Instead of mercilessly cutting down trees, arboriculture offers a way for trees to coexist within the city with urban demands of electricity and phone cables.

The association is also collecting information on very old trees, such as the 300 to 400-year-old tamarind tree in Devanahalli. The tree is still growing and its rootlets (new plants sprung from the roots) are now bearing fruit. "We are trying to preserve trees like this," Mr Narayanaswamy added.
