HYDERABAD, Feb. 14

THE National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), here has decided to add a new division, which will focus on Environmental Geophysics from April, 2003, according to its Director, Dr V.P. Dimri.

The institute along with the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, Nagpur, the Indian Toxicological Research Centre, Lucknow have been identified by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research as key laboratories to undertake environment-related studies.

The NGRI has developed specialised divisions related to earthquake studies (seismology); groundwater (hydrology); hydrocarbon exploration; mineral exploration engineering geophysics, lithosphere and earth sciences; geophysical instrumentation among others.

The NGRI has recently been entrusted with a major project of analysing the lakes and drainage system of the twin cities by the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority, as part of its clean and green programme. Assessment of water quality of several lakes would be the focus, Dr Dimri told newspersons here recently.

The NGRI is also involved in scientific studies of the groundwater quality as well as industrial pollution in the industrial areas of the city under a Indo-Norwegian collaborative initiative now underway.

Dr Dimri said to do a thorough study of the inflows, outflows, pollution levels, sources and then to come up with strategies for remedial action, there is a need to collaborate with institutes such as Indian Institute of Chemical Technology and the Environmental Protection, Training and Research Institute, based in Hyderabad.

The NGRI Director cited the example of Pedda Cheruvu, a large lake, which has in the past two decades been totally polluted. There are several such lakes, tanks and reservoirs in Hyderabad, which are progressively getting polluted.
