ATA plans community development projects

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD, Feb. 14

THE American Telugu Association (ATA) is planning to implement various community development programmes in Andhra Pradesh during the next two years with an outlay of over Rs 4 crore.

The association had spent Rs 4 crore on similar projects in the State in the past couple of years. According to the ATA President, Mr A. V. N. Reddy, the association proposed to launch " educate a child" programme under which 50 children from rural areas of the State would be selected and financial support would be extended to each child from primary school to the college level.

The selection of the child would be based on merit and necessity. He said that ATA would also be providing scholarships for meritorious students so as to enable them to go for higher education.

It would extend financial assistance for up-gradation and construction of school buildings in rural areas. The association would set up a committee for selection of children for its education and scholarship programmes.

Mr Reddy told newspersons here on Friday that ATA had many physicians as members and it would be sponsoring health camps in rural areas and urban slums in association with various non-government organisations. In this regard, ATA intended to work with the Indian Medical Association.
