KOLKATA, Feb 15

A LESSER number of outbound international flights from Kolkata and lack of appropriate infrastructure such as cold storage facilities in the international airport here are among the reasons that have hindered the prospects of flower exports from in and around Kolkata.

Stating this at a news conference here on the occasion of the annual flower show, at the 175-year-old Agri-Horticultural Society of India, the Council Members of Society laid stress on the scope for export of flowers from Kolkata.

The annual flower show that is held every year under the aegis of the Society is a platform that showcases wide variety of flowers and horticultural products that exist in the region.

In fact, West Bengal ranks third after Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in terms of the total land area under flower cultivation. Besides, West Bengal ranks foremost among other states with regard to the number of flower nurseries that exists here. "There is great scope for export of orchids, cacti and flowers such as the rose, dhalia, gladiolus and chrysanthemum, among others'', members of the Society's Council said, adding that the destinations for export of flowers could be Thailand, Singapore, Middle East, Europe and South Africa.

Steps were also being taken to tap the domestic market for flowers as well. Flower growers in and around Kolkata were being encouraged to bring and park their potted plants in the premises of The Agri-Horticultural Society so that people can see and purchase them if they wish to.

The Society conducts short-term courses in disciplines such as Home Gardening, Mushroom Production, Bonsai Culture, Ikebana and Medicinal & Aromatic Plants.
