Tea workers' plight

This is with reference to "Tea workers' plight drawing international attention" (Business Line, February 17). It is heartening to see that the representatives of the International Union of Food Workers are studying the situation minutely. The industry has been facing rough weather for the past four years not only because of fall in prices but also due to other aspects such as rising wages, monsoon failure, etc.

It may not be out of place to mention the Indian tea has suffered because of the disintegration of the COMECON countries, including the Soviet Union which was catered by the Indian tea industry on a barter basis. The availability of tea from Vietnam and Indonesia in different attractive credit terms made the erstwhile Eastern Block to buy from them. Apart from this, in 1994, when the industry was booming, the objective was to make 1,000 million kg of tea within five years. As a result, quality was sacrificed for quantity.
