CHENNAI, March 5

MR K.M. Mammen, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, MRF Ltd, has been redesignated as its Chairman and Managing Director. This decision was taken at a meeting of the board of directors today, according to a company press release.

Mr Mammen taking over as the Chairman and Managing Director following the death of his father, K.M. Mammen Mappillai, on March 2, was a foregone conclusion, especially since the succession plan was finalised some years ago. Mr Mammen joined MRF as a whole-time director in 1981 and became its vice-chairman and managing director in 1986.

A keen sports enthusiast, Mr Mammen is credited with spearheading the company's foray into sports sponsorships in a big way. Apart from being active in the racing and rally circuit, MRF is involved in a variety of sports and games. It has set up the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai, which has nurtured some of the leading pace bowlers in the cricket playing world.

Born in 1949, he graduated from the Madras Christian College, after which he underwent training at the Mansfield Tire and Rubber Co of the US, with whose technical collaboration MRF started tyre manufacturing in the 1960s.

MRF's annual general meeting is scheduled for March 20.
