BANGALORE, March 12

THE third edition of Bangalore Bio, the Karnataka-sponsored annual biotechnology meet and trade fair, will have nearly 100 companies as participants, including several biggies such as Eppendorf, Sartorius and Novozymes.

Bangalore Bio 2003 will be held from April 15 to 17 and is set to be twice as big as last year's, according to Mr Vivek Kulkarni, Secretary, IT and Biotechnology. The event will focus on biotechnology, bioengineering, phytopharmaceuticals, R&D-industry-VC partnership, patent issues, bioinformatics, healthcare and pharmaceuticals.

The organiser, the Vision Group on Biotechnology, expects participation from 22 countries and six States besides 25,000 trade ad 30,000 public visitors.

The opportunities in biotechnology, called the business of tomorrow, are said to be vast: the global biotech product market in 2002 was valued at $ 3 billion; the country is expected to attract investments in biotech worth $ 300 million in the next five years.

A new feature will be BioBanquet which will formally close the 2003 event and launch the nest one. A Knowledge Pavilion will showcase the achievements of key research labs and institutes and act as a bridge between them and the industry.
