`Priority to local body projects'

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Minister for Local Administration, Mr Cherkalam Abdullah, has described as baseless reports to the effect that the State Government has been dilly-dallying on the issue of giving technical clearance to projects submitted by the local bodies in the State.

The Minister said in a statement here that almost 90 per cent of the projects submitted have already been accorded technical clearance. The activities of the local self-Government bodies are being worked out on the basis of a time-bound plan under the auspices of the Kerala Development Scheme, which is expected to institutionalise the decentralised planning programme in the State, he said.

Technical clearances are required only in respect of projects pertaining to pubic works, soil conservation and drinking water. The District Collectors have been authorised to revamp the technical clearances committee if that can speed up the grant of the clearances, Mr Abdullah added.
