The Hindu Business Line : Experts urge shift to multi-lateral tax treaties

THE only way to remain globally competitive under the World Trade Organisation regime was to shift from bilateral tax treaties to multi-lateral arrangements, tax experts have said.

Indian traders should also explore advance pricing agreements to ensure that non-residents got a level playing field and fairness in application of local rules in cases of transfer pricing, experts said at an international tax conference organised by Assocham here on Wednesday.

At the conference, the Chairman of the Taskforce on Inter-linking of Rivers, Mr Suresh Prabhu, said at present many countries compete in taxation regimes and even the level of levies was negotiated. Understanding of international taxation was important for domestic players to ensure that they did not become victims of such policies, he said.
