THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, May 14

THE Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) has sanctioned an assistance of Rs 75 crore to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).

The Electricity Minister, Mr Kadavoor Sivadasan, said in a statement that the Chairman of REC would visit the State soon to find out the avenues for more assistance to KSEB. He said the State would receive an additional 27 MW of power from Neyveli power station. This follows Andhra Pradesh relinquishing its claim of 113 MW from Neyveli after the commissioning of a power plant at Seemagiri in that State.

This quantum of power had earlier been apportioned among Karnataka, Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu.

The Minister said Kerala had requested the Centre to raise its share of power from Neyveli to 100 MW from 70 MW at present as and when the second stage of the Neyveli station was commissioned. The Union Minister of power, Mr Anant Geethe, had accepted the proposal in principle, he said. The Minister, who met Mr Geethe in Delhi, said the issue of expanding the generating capacity at the Kayamkulam station of the National Thermal Power Corporation was also discussed.
