Chamber wants technology to create more employment

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, May 14

THE PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Phdcci) has suggested that industries should opt for labour-intensive and capital-saving technology to provide greater employment opportunities in the country.

"The strategy for future should be to encourage the use of labour-intensive technology and rejuvenate the growth of the unorganised sector, which, at present, accounts for 92 per cent of the country's employment and enjoys more than seven times labour intensity per unit of production compared to the organised sector," a Phdcci release said here.

"The sickness of the unorganised sector is growing and it is slowing down due to the opening up of the economy with deregulation and market orientation like withdrawal of key subsidies. Macro economic changes such as removal of quantitative restrictions and reduction of tariffs have also affected their competitiveness,'' the release said.
