19% surge in April apparel exports

NEW DELHI, May 14

THE inaugural month of the current fiscal saw a surge in the country's readymade garments as such exports notched up a growth of 19 per cent in volume and 24 per cent in value terms to continue last fiscal year's sustained increase.

Figures compiled by the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) here said that export of garment to restricted (quota) countries during April 2003 was 204.2 million pieces valued at $375.9 million, against 87.5 million pieces valued at $303.1 million in the corresponding month of 2002.

Exports to the US in April 2003 amounted to 36.4 million pieces valued at $171.1 million, representing an increase of 10.64 per cent in terms of volume and 10.46 per cent in terms of value when compared to April 2002.

Exports to the European Union amounted to 62.8 million pieces valued at $190.7 million in April 2003, registering a growth of 26.10 per cent in terms of volume and 40.12 per cent in terms of value. Exports to Canada during the period under review amounted to five million pieces valued at $14.1 million, showing a modest increase of 4.17 per cent in volume and 17 per cent in terms of value when compared to April 2002.

In the calendar year 2003, exports of readymade garments to quota countries amounted to 502.9 million pieces valued at $1,864.4 million during the period January to April, which is a significant increase of 18.33 per cent in terms of volume and 32.45 per cent in terms of value when compared with the same period of 2002.

Meanwhile, figures released by the Cotton Textile Export Promotion Council (Texprocil) from Mumbai show that against the target of $4,000 million of cotton yarn, cotton fabrics, cotton made-up, the country exported $2,714.57 million during the period April 2002 to January 2003, achieving a moderate growth rate of 5.50 per cent and fulfilling the target by 68 per cent.
