Bio-diversity study in colliery area

HYDERABAD: The State-owned Singareni Collieries Company Ltd, has proposed to collaborate with the World Wildlife Fund and the Birdwatchers' Society of Andhra Pradesh in studies relating to bio-diversity in the colliery areas, according to Singareni communiqué.

As a part of this initiative and social forestry, the collieries has undertaken a massive plantation programme in about 4,600 ha. This would also mean construction of effluent treatment and sewerage treatment plants and water harvesting structures in the mining areas. The company has embarked on a unique concept of bio-engineering of over burden dumps.

At a workshop on building forestry and creating environment consciousness where the company Chairman and Managing Director, Mr R.H. Khwaja, participated, Singareni has announced its plans to include environmental science courses from class six in 17 schools located in the mining area. This is aimed at sensitising children in maters concerning environment and sustainable growth.
