Trade unions

In the context of liberalisation and reforms, trade unions are facing new challenges. In the article "Trade Unions: Retaining their relevance" (Business Line, June 16) the author has made some suggestions to make them more relevant. Despite being a small percentage, trade unions are able to make governments and managements bow to their demands. However, a change is taking place. Their usual strategy of calling for a strike has not found acceptance with the common people.

Trade unions will have to change their strategy to find favour with the people. Without limiting their role to the organised sector, they will have to work for the welfare of the workers. The greatest service they could do is to end corruption. That will, to large extent, solve the problems of the people. Will they rise to the occasion?
