New Products & Services Apple to unveil new version Mac Tunia Cherian George
MUMBAI, June 16 THE next version of the Mac OS X, code named Panther, will be unveiled later this month at a developers meet in the US. The operating system, which is in the beta or development phase, will be shared with prospective customers at the meet to get their feedback on the product. According to Mr Deepanshu Sharma, Marketing Manager, Apple Computer International Pvt Ltd, the OS X was just one of the range of products being developed by Apple. He told Business Line that the company's recent foray into the video space with I-Tunes Music Store, an online music store accessible in the US, had recorded three million song downloads in the very first month of its launch. Songs can be downloaded for 99 cents a song at the online music store, which also allows the customer to search, browse and even preview a song before deciding to download it. Besides, the company had also introduced the Final Cut Pro (FCP), a non-linear editing tool, and SHAKE, a special effects and compositing tool for editing films. These products had extended Apple's product portfolio and its addressable market, he said. According to him, market share was not a matter of concern for Apple since its products were not targeted at the mass market. However, the company had a diverse client profile comprising users from home, office, video editors, graphics professionals, publishers, corporates and even biotechnologists. Further, he said, the Apple had recorded "steady growth" in the past two years. According to Mr Sharma, only two computer firms had recorded profits during this troubled period, one of which was Apple, the other being Dell. According to him, Macs accounted for 4-6 per cent of the market share.
