The IBM Centre of Excellence is being set up in collaboration with the Board for IT Education Standards (BITES) and the Hubli chapter of the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore (IIIT-B).

BANGALORE, June 16

KARNATAKA'S information technology department is planning to organise a major event to promote Hubli as a destination for IT investments.

"We are looking at organising events such as Hubli IT.com in the near future to attract companies to invest there," said the Karnataka's IT secretary, Mr Vivek Kulkarni, on the sidelines of a press conference.

Apart from Bangalore IT.com, the Karnataka IT department has been successfully organising regional events like MysoreIT.com over the last few years. Events like Hubli IT.com would highlight the potential the region offers to prospective investors and to the companies that plan to expand their operations, he said.

Recently, the State Government has signed up a MoU with IBM India to promote the e-learning initiative, as part of which IBM is planning to set up IBM Centre of Excellence at Hubli devoted to the development of Open Source Software.

The IBM Centre of Excellence is being set up in collaboration with the Board for IT Education Standards (BITES) and the Hubli chapter of the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore (IIIT-B).

Incidentally, the Hubli chapter of IIIT-B is working on nearly 100 projects for developing various applications on Linux, Mr Kulkarni said. "We are in talks with IBM to expand the scope and increase the number of these projects to over 300. We expect that over 600 engineering students around Hubli to benefit from this initiative," he added.

The Software Technology Parks of India has set up a unit in Hubli. However, not too many companies have invested or set up operations at STPI Hubli. Among the companies that have set up operations at STPI Hubli include Tata Teleservices and a few small players.

The Karnataka IT department in collaboration with STPI, Bangalore has been trying to promote Hubli as an alternative IT destination.
