Vishwanath Kulkarni

BANGALORE, June 23

ESSAR Information Technology Ltd, the IT subsidiary of $1.2-billion Essar group of companies, plans to aggressively look for revenues outside the group even while consolidating its position in the systems integration and package implementation space.

Mr Vivek Kale, CEO, Essar IT, told Business Line that the company, which did software implementation and IT maintenance for group companies, would take up systems integration on a major scale for outside clients.

Essar IT is a major implementation partner for ERP vendor, SAP, and has an expertise in the process industry with a focus on the oil and gas sector.

"We are now looking at implementing packages for the banking sector and also in the areas of customer relationship management (CRM)," Mr Kale said.

He added that the company was in talks with major vendors such as Siebel among others.

"We are more interested in tying up with product platform companies."

Essar is also in talks with SAP for taking up the implementation of its core banking solution.

SAP is planning to introduce its core-banking solution in the Indian market this year.

"We have a good profile of projects within the Essar group, which we would like to showcase when tapping business outside the group."

The erstwhile in-house IT division of the Essar group has carried out ERP implantation project for Essar's oil refineries, steel plants among others.

Essar IT has a team of about 200 professionals, of whom nearly 80 are servicing the group.

The company clocked revenues of Rs 6 crore last year, a major portion of which came from the group itself.

Essar IT, which is aggressively looking for business outside the group, is projecting a turnover of Rs 18 crore for the current year, Mr Kale said.

Apart from looking at the Indian market, it is planning to tap the South Asian and African markets for its systems integration services.

In the CRM space, the company plans to address certain individual requirements in areas like hospitality.

Essar IT has also stepped into facilities management and data centre operations, with special emphasis on SAP.

"We see great potential in setting up data centre operations for companies," Mr Kale said.

He added that the company had a good pipeline of projects.
