BANGALORE, June 23

TATA Teleservices said today that it has planned a series of initiatives to strengthen its backbone network in Karnataka, which includes expansion of its optical fibre network and setting up more cell sites.

Mr Prabhat Pani, Chief Operating Officer for Karnataka, told newspersons that the company plans to add a total of 12 more cell sites in Karnataka and roll out its services in 31 more short distance charging areas (SDCA).

The company has also decided to set up an additional 2,000 km of optical fibre backbone across the State in three years. In Bangalore alone, it plans lay an optical fibre ring of about 200 km.

Mr Pani said the Bangalore-Mysore optical fibre backbone is ready and will be extended to Mangalore by July 2003. The company has already committed an investment of around Rs 1,000 crore during the next six years. It has so far invested Rs 300 crore in the State.

Mr Pani said these initiatives would boost the growth of its various services. He said the company has a subscriber base of around 45,000 since the launch of its services in November 2002.

He said half of these are fixed wireless subscribers and the rest are limited mobility subscribers.

Mr Pani said to grow the limited mobility subscriber base, the company has launched two schemes.

The Rs 999 scheme offers free talk time of 1,200 minutes per month, while the Rs 450 scheme offers talk time of 400 minutes per month. The free airtime is only for calling any CDMA phone across the country.
