Chennai , Aug. 8

THE Income-Tax Department would make the refund payments to assessees within one month, if the returns are filed through the e-Return mode, the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Chennai Circle, Dr K. Gopalan, said here today.

e-Return is an electronic return filing system, done through six selected banks (UTI Bank, HDFC Bank, IDBI Bank, ICICI Bank, Bharat Overseas Bank and the Indian Overseas Bank). An assessee who has a PAN number can file his returns through this mode from one of these banks.

Since a return filed through e-Return is already in electronic form, processing it would be easy and therefore, refunds could be effected within a month, Dr Gopalan said. He added that in the last about a year, refunds of over Rs 1,000 crore had been made to assessees.

He was speaking at the function held at Bharat Overseas Bank to launch the e-Return facility.

The Chairman of the bank, Mr G. Krishna Murthy, said that the IT Department had left the issue of fees for the service, to the respective banks. He said that BOBL would charge a fee of Rs 100 for filing a return, and an additional Rs 50, if the assessee needed the bank's help in filling up the return form.
