Kerala hopeful of Rs 6,400-cr mop-up in sales tax

THE Kerala Government has targeted to collect Rs 6,400 crore as sales tax in the current year.

The Finance Minister, Mr K. Sankaranarayanan, said at a meeting of deputy tax commissioners here on Friday that tax collection would be intensified during the Onam festival and special squads formed to check tax evasion.

He said there was 21 per cent increase in tax collection last year and going by the trend, the target for the current year could be achieved.

He asked the Taxes Commissioner to fix a realistic target for the next year after taking into account the changes being brought into the Budget cycle.
