States urged to complete rural water survey

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Aug. 14

THE Centre on Thursday urged State Governments to complete rural water quality surveys by September-end to pave the way for immediate steps to check contamination in drinking water.

Over 20 million rural households are facing problems due to excess fluoride, arsenic, salinity, iron or nitrate in drinking water, the Rural Development Minister, Mr Kashiram Rana, told the Consultative Committee meeting attached to his Department here on Thursday.

He said his Ministry had decided that of the funds available under the Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme, 5 per cent would be earmarked for meeting requirements in the rural water supply sector arising out of natural calamities such as drought, flood and earthquake.
