Special cover to be released

HYDERABAD: `Pillalamarri', the nearly 700-year-old banyan tree, located about eight km from the Mahbubnagar town will feature on a special cover to be released by the Department of Posts during the proposed philatelic exhibition at Mahbubnagar on August 29 and 30.

The Chief Postmaster General, AP Circle, Mr T.S. Govindarajan, will release the cover. The ancient banyan tree, which appears like a small hillock with green foliage, can give shelter under its `green umbrella' for at least a 1,000 people.

Its branches extend over an area of three acres and under the tree is the tomb of a Muslim saint.

Interestingly, Anantapur is the home to the largest banyan tree in the world listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. Called Timmamma Marrimanu, it spreads over 5.2 acres and is located about 25 km from Kadiri town. The over 500-year-old banyan tree is a tourist attraction and the State Tourism Departments are taking steps to promote it.
