Hardware Commercial segment pushes PC sales up 11.8% Our Bureau
New Delhi , Aug. 21 PERSONAL computer (PC) sales in the country for the quarter ended June 2003 grew by 11.8 per cent to 5.95 lakh units, aided by robust growth in the commercial desktop segment, according to IDC India, an IT market research firm. Commercial PC market recorded `stronger than expected growth' in the quarter due to a spill over in billings in the first quarter. A proportion of deals finalised in the January-February-March (JFM) quarter were billed in the April-May-June (AMJ) quarter, IDC pointed out in a statement here. On a sequential basis, however, PC marked showed a drop of 8.1 per cent in the second quarter as the JFM quarter traditionally generates strong PC sales. IDC said unlike the commercial PC segment, which grew 13.3 per cent year-on-year to 3.71 lakh units, the consumer desktop segment performed lower than expected with a meagre 4.5 per cent growth. Sales of consumer PCs stood at 1.93 lakh. "The extreme summer heat during the second half of the quarter lead to families preferring to invest in consumer durables rather than desktops" said Mr Aman Munglani, Head - Computing Products Research, IDC India, in a statement. IDC said run rate business had picked up during the quarter and continued activity within the corporates, primarily the banking and the finance segment, as well as the Government buying helped the PC market perform in line with earlier expectations. Among the PC makers, HCL Infosystems regained the top spot in the commercial desktop space with sales of 36,075 units and market share of 9.6 per cent while Hewlett-Packard (HP) followed second with a market share of 8.3 per cent and IBM reached the third slot in commercial PCs with a market share of 8.1 per cent. In the consumer desktop space, HP dominated the market with sales of 13,060 units that fetched the company a market share of 6.8 per cent. HCL came second with a 4.3 per cent, IDC said. Notebook sales continued to surge with a year-on-year growth of 52 per cent, fuelled by corporate and Government demand. Shipments of all top five-notebook vendors - HP, IBM, Toshiba, Dell, and Acer - registered steady growth. HP emerged the leader in this category, followed by IBM and Toshiba. IDC said it expected the commercial desktop segment to continue to grow in the second half of 2003 as overall economic recovery has started. However, the consumer segment might take some more time to reflect this growth.
