WTO meet at Cancun

Everyone is looking forward to Cancun, where the WTO Trade Ministers will be meeting to discuss issues of multilateral international trade from September 10. The meet is crucial for India and the success depends on how the "Heavy mantle on Jaitley" (Business Line, August 28) is handled. If agriculture forms the backbone of WTO negotiations, it is the mainstay of India's economy and the welfare of the people.

Another important area for India will be to put an end to discriminatory market entry, such as barriers to the movement of developing country service suppliers to the developed nations.

India should get the support of like-minded countries and be able to convince the developed nations to be flexible and to come to terms with the large developing world in their own long-term interest.
