Thiruvananthapuram , Sept. 3

SIFY Ltd has announced its decision to invest in Kerala. The company will establish a network operations centre (NOC) at the Kinfra IT Park in Kochi.

This facility will serve as the company's base for its broadband `last mile' solutions and be integrated with its Internet backbone. To begin with, the company is expected to occupy some 5,000 sq ft of space at the IT Park.

Announcing this at a press conference in the city today, Mr P.K. Kunhalikutty, Minister, Industries and IT, Government of Kerala, said the company's decision to invest in Kerala was a `strategic' investment and an indication of the evolution of a favourable industrial environment in the State.

The Government now expected more major players in the information technology arena to invest in the State, the Minister emphasised.

The IT department was currently in discussions with several major IT companies, he added.

The company expected its NOC in Kochi to become operational in a couple of months, said Mr Rustom Irani, Chief Technology Officer, Sify Ltd. This facility was expected to evolve into the company's regional hub for its Internet backbone, he added.

Describing the decision to locate the NOC in Kochi as a "large investment" for the company, he said the company would invest, at the very least, between Rs 2 crore and Rs 3 crore in the start-up phase. However, the investment in this venture can go up very rapidly, he added.

The Kochi facility will enable the company to create and manage Internet-based solutions for other organisations, said Mr Irani.

This facility was likely to be extremely useful for other companies who operate in the ITES/BPO domain, he emphasised.

Ms Aruna Sundararajan, Secretary-IT, Government of Kerala, Dr G.C. Gopala Pillai, Managing Director, KINFRA and Mr M Sivasankar, Director, Kerala IT Mission, were also present on the occasion.
