Education Student-enabling projects in science being launched in Kerala Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , Sept. 22 THE Chief Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, will formally dedicate, on October 2, `Sastraposhini', a student-enabling project aimed at promoting science education in schools in the State. Being launched under the banner of the Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) at a function to be presided over by Dr. M.S. Valiathan, Executive Vice-President, KSCSTE, Sastraposhini will enjoy funding assistance from the council and be put under the overall supervision of the Department of Education, Kerala. Giving details, an official said the project aimed to prepare the students for an appropriate career in science and technology through high quality science education. To achieve this, one model laboratory each in Physics, Chemistry and Biology will be set up in one school in each of the 36 educational districts of the State. The project envisages a scenario wherein students will be free to use the laboratories for conducting experiments by themselves. Separate study circles will be developed involving groups of students to help engage themselves in problem solving and critical discussions. This will convey to the students the excitement of "getting practical with science". A programme of training science teachers is another important feature of the scheme. Eminent scholars have already extended training to teachers in different disciplines. Parent /teacher associations will also have a major role to play in the scheme, the official said. In the first phase, 10 model laboratories will be established at the Government Model High School, Thycaud, Thiruvananthpauram, the Government Higher Secondary School, Venjaramood, Thiruvananthpauram, the Government Higher Secondary School, Parasala, Thiruvananthpauram, the SMT Higher Secondary School, Chelakkara, Thrissur, the Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School, Thrissur, the Government AJJM Girls High School, Thalayolaparambu, Ernakulam, the Government Higher Secondary School, Kudayathoor, Thodupuzha, Idukki, the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Mundakayam, Kottayam, the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School for Girls, Kasaragode, and the KNPM Girls Vocational Higher Secondary School, Pariyaram, Kannur. The selection was made in consultation with the Department of Education, followed by reconnaissance missions taken out to the respective schools. On completion of the first phase, the remaining schools will be progressively covered in the second phase. The entire programme is proposed to be completed in two academic years. According to the official, the Sastraposhini scheme will lead to better enrolment for science courses, improved competitiveness of science graduates at the national level and larger number of talented students getting drawn towards opting for a career in science. The present proposal for setting up one model science laboratory each is a pilot programme being promoted by the Council in consultation with the Department of Education.
