Mixed trend at Kochi tea sales

A MIXED trend persisted for almost all varieties of tea at the Kochi tea auction. Though the leaf sale witnessed a good general demand, it was comparatively low for dust varieties.

There was only a less general demand in the dust sale and the quantity on offer was 9,09,000 kg. The CTC market opened by Rs 2-3 lower, but the drop was more as the sale progressed. Orthodox tended to ease.

The best CTC varieties commanded prices between Rs 46-69, medium CTC realised Rs 37-45 and poorer type were quoted Rs 26-32. High grown BOPD realised Rs 42-108. Secondaries were quoted at Rs 28-30.

However, the leaf sale witnessed a good general demand and the quantity on offer was 2,25,000 kg. Orthodox medium brokens and good secondaries were fully firm to dearer. High grown Brokens and Fannings irregular. High-priced orthodox leaf grades were easier. CTC's fully firm to dearer by Rs 1-1.50. CIS shippers and other exporters were selective following quality on Orthodox grades.

The best Nilgiri varieties commanded prices between Rs 47-60, medium Orthodox realised Rs 36-52. The best CTC leaf fetched prices between Rs 38-40, while medium CTC were quoted Rs 32-36.
