Govt inks pact with FAO to boost apple production

New Delhi , Oct. 8

THE Union Agriculture Ministry and FAO have entered into a project collaboration agreement for carrying out improvements in apple production.

The project proposal agreement was signed last week by Mr Naved Masood, Joint Secretary (International Co-operation), Ministry of Agriculture, and Mr Daniel Gustafson, FAO Representative in India.

The project, to be implemented in Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal aims to arrest the decline in apple production and productivity.

The main objective of the joint project, according to an FAO statement, is to strengthen and develop the State Governments' capabilities in improving apple production and the nursery sector, as a means to increase food security, through the provision of select technologies, expert advice, training and planting material.

The 18-month project with a budget of $360,000 is to be funded from FAO's technical co-operation programme.

It will cover the costs of international and national consultants, equipment, contracts and training, including an overseas study tour to Australia and New Zealand.
