H1 diamond exports up 13 per cent

THE country's polished diamond exports during the first half of the fiscal increased 13 per cent to $3.83 billion compared to $3.40 billion during the same period last year, according to provisional data released by the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC).

During the period, rough imports totalled $3.33 billion, down 2.4 per cent from $3.56 billion. In terms of quantity, rough imports declined 21.3 per cent to 83.8 million carats from 106.5 million carats. During the period, polished exports actually went up by 8 per cent to 17.5 million carats.

Rough diamond imports during September reached $542.6 million, down 3 per cent compared to $559.1 million in September 2002. In terms of quantity, rough diamond imports totalled 16.1 million carats in September 2003, down 19.7 per cent on September 2002.

In September 2003, polished diamond exports increased 36.3 per cent to $867.2 million compared to $636.1 million in September 2002. In terms of quantity, polished exports increased 16.5 per cent to 4 million carats.
