Hyderabad , Oct. 20

THE Railways has hinted at awarding maintenance works to retired employees in a bid to improve safety.

Addressing a seminar on safety here, Mr Nitish Kumar, Railway Minister, said a group of retired employees, who had rich expertise in the field of maintenance, could form a company and come forward with specific proposals. "The Ministry will certainly look into the issue."

"In the first six months of the current financial year, the number of accidents has come down significantly from 66 per cent to 52 per cent," he said.

There used to be around 2,000 accidents annually. "Now the number has come down to 351," he said, referring to the criticism in the media about the "growing number of accidents of late".

"Five years from now, there will be no collisions," the Minister asserted.

Stating that the issue of safety concerns nearly 20 crore Indians every day, he asked the staff "to focus on safety of the rolling stock and passengers. I'll take care of you."
