In view of the reduction in duty difference between crude and refined oils, import of RBD palmolein has started increasing.

THE total edible oil imports in to the country increased by 16 per cent to 51.14 lakh tonnes during the oil season 2002-03 (November-October) compared to 44.25 lakh tonnes during the same period in 2002, according to the the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEAI).

This is the highest import since edible oil was put under open general licence (OGL) in 1994. This is also despite import of edible oils slowing down during the last three months compared to June-July period, on hopes of good oilseeds crop during current year. The carotene norms for the crude palm oil has affected shipment to some extent, a SEAI release said.

In view of the reduction in duty difference between crude and refined oils, import of RBD palmolein has started increasing. Import of RBD palmolein has been put at 1,05,613 tonnes during October 2003 compared to nil during the year ago period (October 2002).

Import of edible oils was reported at 3,86,706 tonnes compared to 3,90,450 tonnes. During the period, soyabean oil imports declined to 11,67,723 tonnes from 14,75,531 tonnes the previous year, while sunflower oil, which was just 2,800 tonnes in 2001-02, shipments have jumped to 94,600 tonnes during 2002-03.

Import of refined oils increased to 3,48,373 tonnes compared to 1,22,394 tonnes, where as crude oil has been put at 93 per cent of the year ago period. In last three months, share of refined oil increased from 11 per cent to 27 per cent, which is likely to increase in coming months due to reduction in duty difference between crude and refined palm oils.

Palm oil product imports have also increased by 8,79,443 tonnes to 38,09,891 tonnes in 2002-03 from 29,30,448 tonnes in 2001-02, representing 74 per cent of the total import. It was 64 per cent last year and 61 per cent in 2000-01.

Soft oils import (soya, sun and rape oils) declined to 26 per cent (of total edible oils) compared to 34 per cent in previous year and 39 per cent during 2000-01.
