West Bengal privatises truck terminal

Our Bureau

The West Bengal Government has decided to privatise its truck terminal at Kona near Kolkata and has, accordingly, decided to appoint a consultant to suggest how to go about it. The reason is simple.

Launched early this year with much fanfare, the terminal is yet to take off. This is in sharp contrast to a privately-run truck terminal located nearby.

The privately-run terminal is choked with vehicles whereas the government-run one wears a deserted look.

It is, of course, not yet known whether the government will give the terminal on long-term lease to a private party or transfer the ownership to it.

Much will depend on the recommendation of the consultant. Spread over 70 acres of land at Kona in Howrah district, the terminal was built at a substantial cost but continues to be lacking in infrastructure, enough to put off any truck operator.

Running a truck terminal successfully requires certain amount of professional skill.
