Farm advisory: Weeding and top dressing may continue in paddy fields, while a close watch is needed against possible infestation of gall midge in newly planted areas and leaf roller in established fields. Should the infestation exceed the threshold level, spraying with Quinalphos at 1.5 ml/litre of water has been recommended. Monocroptophos at 1.2 ml/litre of water may be administered in the paddy fields to keep leaf roller and stem borer at bay. In coconut gardens, stem bleeding has been indicated as a possibility. Affected portions should be cleaned and smeared with hot tar or Bordeaux paste. The dreaded Mahali disease in arecanut and the quick wilt in pepper can be brought under control by spraying 1 per cent Bordeaux mixture. Similarly, quenchable sulphur at 4 gm/litre of water can be effectively used against mite infestation in coconut. Intercultural operations and top dressing may be continued in banana, tapioca and seasonal vegetables. Weeding and a second dose of fertiliser application can be resorted to in coconut, arecanut, cashew and rubber. State and stage of crops: The Mundakan paddy is in the tillering stages. Intercultural operations, weeding and a second dose of fertiliser application were in progress in coconut, cashew and rubber. Pepper was in the berry maturing stage. Harvesting and drying of nuts were the main concerns in arecanut. Plant protection measures against wilt disease were in progress in arecanut, thrips in cardamom, mite infestation in coconut and stem borer in paddy.
